This page covers the GDT procedure "New Plate for a Diplomatic Vehicle". The GDT publishes it as a short list of requirements, so everything below comes from that list. Where the GDT page says nothing, we say so instead of guessing.
The procedure is about the vehicle and its plates. If you are a diplomat who also needs a driving license, that is a separate process: the GDT conditions for non-Kuwaitis list diplomatic members among the groups excluded from the residency, salary and university-degree requirements. See Conditions for non-Kuwaitis.
Documents you need
Required documents
The GDT lists these requirements for a new diplomatic plate:
- Insurance document
- Customs certificate (the GDT page spells it "Costumes certificate")
- A document from the embassy, authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Technical inspection if the vehicle was imported from abroad (vehicles bought from an authorized local agency are exempt)
Good to know
- Work out which case you are in before you go. A vehicle brought in from outside the country has to pass the technical inspection. A vehicle bought on the local market from an authorized agency is exempt from it.
- The GDT page for this procedure does not say where the inspection takes place. For ordinary new registrations the GDT sends imported vehicles to the Technical Inspection - International Standards Division in Al-Assima (see New vehicle registration), but do not assume the same applies here: confirm it with the GDT.
- What the GDT page does not say: it lists no fee, no application form, no processing time and no description of the plates themselves. We do not list or estimate any of these. Check the official GDT page linked at the bottom of this page.
