An unlicensed vehicle with metallic plates is exported directly through the customs department. A new, never-registered vehicle goes straight from the importer to customs: it has no plates and no file at the GDT.
For vehicles that were licensed before, follow the steps below. To cancel the registration instead, see Cancel vehicle registration.
Steps for a previously licensed vehicle
- Show insurance valid for at least 1 month.
- Pass vehicle inspection.
- Cancel the vehicle in the traffic department computer system.
- Submit the document and plates to the specialized department.
- Receive the export plates. They are valid for 48 hours and are given to the owner when the vehicle leaves the country.
- Plates are removed at the border. If they expire, renew them after paying any violations.
